If your amalgam fillings are cracked or you just don’t like the way they look, our dentists can remove them and replace them with a more natural looking material.
Amalgam removal is the removal and replacement of silver amalgam fillings. During the procedure, our dentists will keep you comfortable with pain relief before removing the filing.
Some of the tooth structure might need to be removed. We’ll use protection measures to isolate your teeth and prevent the inhalation or swallowing of amalgam as it’s removed. Your amalgam filing will then be replaced with another material, like composite or porcelain.
If you have a cracked or broken filing, we recommend coming in for a consultation as soon as possible. Cracks or chips in the amalgam can make it easy for bacteria to attack your tooth and cause tooth decay.
The amalgam needs to be removed and replaced with new material. If your silver filings are in good condition, but you want them replaced with a natural-looking material, we’re also happy to chat to you about replacement options.
We’ll start with a consultation and can alleviate any questions or concerns you have about keeping your silver fillings or about the procedure itself.
Choosing what material your silver fillings are replaced with is up to you and your dentist. Your dentist may make recommendations for their replacement based on how much of the tooth structure is removed.

Silver amalgam fillings contain a small amount of mercury, silver, tin and copper but extensive research has proven amalgam to be a safe option for filings. One of the reasons we don’t use amalgam in fillings at Gentle Dental is that it can expand and contract at certain temperatures, putting strain on your teeth. Amalgam fillings also require more of the tooth to be removed than composite or porcelain filings. If you have amalgam fillings, make sure you are seeing your dentist for regular checkups.
There are some downsides to getting silver amalgam fillings removed. When a filing is cut out, some of the tooth structure is cut away with it. If you chose to have your silver filings removed for aesthetic reasons it’s worth noting that you might be removing more structure than necessary, especially if your filings are in good condition.
Popular materials to replace your silver amalgam filings include porcelain and composite. Our dentists will talk through a range of options with you and may make recommendations based on the strength of your teeth once the amalgam is removed.
