If you're an adult and are experiencing the following symptoms it might be time to ask your dentist whether dentures are right for you.
When is it time to consider dentures?
The idea of getting dentures might feel scary to some, but dentures are very common not to mention a lot more comfortable than they used to be. In New Zealand, around 300,000 Kiwis wear them. If you're an adult and are experiencing the following symptoms it might be time to ask your dentist whether dentures are right for you.
Tooth loss
This is the leading reason for getting dentures. As we age, a weakened immune system can make us more susceptible to things like tooth decay, gum disease or dry mouth from medications. It can also be harder to stay on top of a good oral care routine.
Multiple missing teeth are a problem as they can make it hard to chew. They can also cause speech problems or might make you embarrassed to smile as much as you used to. If you’re missing multiple teeth in different areas, partial dentures might be right for you.
Severe tooth decay
Before tooth loss often comes tooth decay. Severe cavities aren’t always able to be treated. While dentists don’t like to pull out teeth (contrary to popular belief) teeth that can’t be saved with a root canal or filling may need to be extracted.
Booking a dental checkup is a great way to stay ontop of your oral health. With just a couple of x-rays your dentist will be able to see any problem areas of decay – and can make a recommendation on what to do about it.
Gum disease
Advanced gum disease can cause teeth to loosen in their sockets. This is because blood flow to the gums is being restricted. Wobbly teeth are at a higher risk of falling out and even if you haven’t yet lost multiple teeth – you may still be a contender for partial or a full mouth of dentures.
Ongoing tooth pain
Broken or crooked teeth can cause pain, especially as we age. If your teeth are simply uncomfortable due to too many cracked, chipped or broken teeth, dentures might simply feel more comfortable.
Bone loss
Our bones loose density as we age. But things like gum disease can make this process happen a lot faster than you might like. A tooth implant is often a good solution for tooth loss. But, if your jaw bone isn’t strong enough to support the implant, partial dentures may be a better option.
Are dentures a natural part of aging?
They don’t have to be! A lot of people think that dentures are just part and parcel of turning old. With around 80% of women and 70% of men above age 80, it’s easy to see why you’d think this. The thing is, most people need dentures because of tooth loss not because of old age. Some people even get partial dentures in their forties or fifties because they suffer from tooth loss or gum disease and a dental implant isn’t an option.
Types of dentures available
There are a few types of dentures available in New Zealand.
Full dentures – these replace an entire set of teeth. Some people may need both their upper and lower sets of teeth replaced with dentures or just one row.
Partial dentures – these are made out of a plate and can have several false teeth attached to them in different positions.
Immediate dentures – these are fitting right after a tooth is removed, and are only used for the healing phase.
